BUSANA MALAYSIA
7th July – 30th July 2023
The Starhill, Eslite Spectrum KL
Mon – Sun, 10am – 10pm
Humans are incorrigibly curious animals, driven to explore the unknown and seek what lies beyond the horizon. What was true of our nomadic forebears remains oddly valid today: movement is the nature of modern, urban life, where we commute to work, travel for work, and travel some more to get away from it all. World-altering crises notwithstanding, it seems the urge to roam about is so ingrained in the human psyche that it is, well, here to stay.
In this collection, artwork pays homage to some of Malaysia’s leading fashion designers and their take on traditional costumes. By using unconventional brush strokes to convey the contemporary twist on tradition, the outcome is a convergence of different cultures, the old and the new, fashion and function.
‘Her painting platforms individualised and unique female faces and figures, each of brazen charm and spirit, are ritually explored by renowned publications.’
We increasingly find our spaces filled with cultural capitals from Europe, Japan, and Korea amongst others through various mediums, whether photography or art. Malaysian’s unique fashion which is borne from a dearth of cultural amalgamation in this special melting pot is underrepresented. Our inherited fashion deserves a spotlight in the international arena because they are, indeed, works of art in their own right.
